Keep Judge Andrea Gunderson Serving Our Community

About Judge Andrea Gunderson

Judge Andrea Inez Gunderson was appointed to the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court in March 2025 by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, after being recommended by the bipartisan Judicial Nominating Commission. She now serves in the Civil Division, where she manages one of the busiest dockets in New Mexico. Andrea must stand for election in 2026 to continue serving on the bench and working for our community.

Before her appointment, Andrea served as Special Commissioner in the Second Judicial Children's Court. In that role, she presided over matters involving abuse and neglect, juvenile delinquency, and mental health commitments. Her legal career spans nearly two decades, beginning as an Assistant District Attorney in Bernalillo County prosecuting DWI and domestic violence cases, followed by more than a decade in private practice where she focused on child welfare, criminal defense, and civil litigation. Over the years, she has tried more than 20 jury trials and over 300 bench trials, giving her extensive courtroom experience across both civil and criminal law.

Andrea is a lifelong New  Mexican. Born and raised in Albuquerque, she graduated from Valley High School before attending the University of New Mexico, where she earned a dual bachelor's degree in Political Science and Spanish. She went on to complete a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Policy and Planning at the UNM Anderson School of Management, followed by her Juris Doctorate at the UNM School of Law.

My Commitment to Public Trust in the Judiciary

"Appearing in court before a judge can be one of the most stressful situations anyone faces. It is of the utmost importance to me to serve with understanding, patience, sympathy, kindness, and humanity of all who appear before me. My goal is to uphold public trust in the judiciary system while protecting the rights of all parties involved." -Judge Andrea Inez Gunderson

As a judge, Andrea is committed to ensuring that every individual who comes before the court is treated with fairness, dignity, and respect. Her decisions are guided by the law, free from outside influence, and grounded in compassion.

Serving Our Community

Throughout her career, Andrea has dedicated herself to public service. She has volunteered as a faculty member at the UNM School of Law for more than a decade, teaching courses in evidence, trial practice, and depositions to both students and community lawyers. She also contributes to youth education by regularly speaking at career fairs, coaching high school debate teams, and serving as a volunteer judge for mock trial competitions.

Her civic service extends to numerous organizations and committees focused on child welfare and family well-being. She has played a leading role in reunification celebrations for families who successfully navigate the legal system, honoring not only parents and children but also judicial officers, social workers, and peer mentors who make these successes possible. For Judge Gunderson, the work of the court is inseparable from the strength of the community it serves.

Away from the Bench

Outside the courtroom, Andrea values time spent with her family and community. She believes in the importance of gratitude and balance in life, and finds joy in appreciating the simple moments that give life meanings. Her volunteer work, mentorship of young attorneys, and commitment to supporting children and families reflect her belief that service does not end with the workday, but is a way of life.
